I encountered this book by chance when part of the NPR interview of Edward Humes, author of Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash caught my attention.

In the interview, Humes was talking about Bakelite, an early plastic that was used for billiard balls, piano keys, and telephones — things that were meant to be durable, and have long, even heirloom-length, lives. He was calm and reasoned, not casting blame but describing a shift in the way materials are used as being problematic. It was impersonal, informative, and assumed intelligence from the audience.

Humes opens the book with an anecdote of elderly hoarders, Jesse & Thelma Gaston, who had been trapped in their own home, by their own trash, for three weeks. He moves further into the story of trash by describing other hoarders, the condition of hoarding, and the media attention it has received in the last few years. His punchline is startling:

"But little if any thought is given to the refuse itself, or to the rather scarier question of how any person, hoarder or not, can possibly generate so much trash so quickly.
Of course, there’s a reason for this blind spot: namely, the amount of junk, trash, and waste that hoarders generate is perfectly, horrifyingly normal. It’s just that most of us hoard it in landfills instead of living rooms, so we never see the truly epic quantities of stuff that we all discard. But make no mistake: The two or three years it took the Gastons to fill their house with five to six tons of trash is typical for an American couple." (page 3/location 106)

He follows this assertion with a discussion of how much trash the average American generates daily, coming up with an average lifetime production of 102 tons of trash.
Edward Humes introduces his readers to what is called garbology or the study of trash. Mr. Humes sets himself the objective to answer three questions in his study of trash:

1. What is the nature and cost of the 7.1 pounds of trash that each American generates on average every day during his/her lifetime (102-tons of trash legacy)?
2. How is it possible to generate so much trash with often too little thought spent on this generation rate?
3. What can be done to reduce this mountain of waste that each American generates during his/her life (pp. 4; 12; 92; 140; 155)?

1. Mr. Humes shares with his audience some interesting stats about the biggest "fillers" of America’s landfills. Furniture & furnishings, clothing & footwear, and wood packaging represent the biggest contributors of total landfilled trash by weight (p. 34). Readers also learn that paper, food scraps, yard waste, and plastics each represent more than 10% of materials that Americans throw away, by weight, before recycling and composting. In addition, Mr. Humes discloses that containers & packaging, nondurable goods, durable goods, and food scraps represent together over 90% of the product categories that Americans bury in their landfills, by weight, after recycling and composting (p. 35).

Similarly, Mr. Humes does a great job in bringing to light the cost of that trash to the U.S. economy. The Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council estimates that the current system of burying waste in landfills amounts to burying a billion barrels of oil a year that could be used for much needed energy (p. 232). Waste Management, Inc., on its side, is working on new processes that could one day make it possible to derive over $200 worth of synthetic gasoline from a ton of trash.

About the Author

James R. Evans is professor in the Department of Operations, Business Analytics, and Information Systems in the Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati. His service includes president of the Decision Sciences Institute 1997-1998 and 11 years on the Board of Examiners and Panel of Judges for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. He has been Editor of the Quality Management Journal, published by the American Society for Quality, and served on editorial boards of numerous other journals. Dr. Evans has published more than 90 refereed papers and more than 30 editions of books. During the annual Quality Congress in May 2004, The American Society for Quality presented Dr. Evan and co-author Bill Lindsay with the Philip B. Crosby Medal for writing THE MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL OF QUALITY, 6E. The Crosby medal was presented “for authoring a distinguished book contributing significantly to the extension of the philosophy and application of the principles, methods, and techniques of quality management.”

This covers the general history of quality assurance, especially in the last 100 years, and does a good job of presenting numerous case studies with often recent examples in manufacturing and services. Used as a textbook in classes, it is also an excellent reference book.

Relevant to the course work but they is this so much more expensive over the older edition? It’s the same book with changed around chapters. Sorry excuse to make more money. The material itself is accurate and just what I needed to know for class projects and tests.

The book itself is great condition and was received promptly before my class. The contents are easy to read and convey realistic and very applicable material.

A pretty decent math book, but I only bought it because my school uses it and I wanted an extra copy to keep at home so I didn’t have to lug it back and forth w/ 8,000 other books a day. But it is lightweight, thanks to its lack of unnecessary graphics, and according to my math teachers, it’s packed with problems, including extra practice. It has a good amount of examples.It also has a few random biographies of mathematicians and scientists that are interesting, but mostly pointless, and have little correlations to the sections. There are also small sections about math careers. Additionally, there are computer exercises for students with programming experience. Answers to odd problems are in the back, which is a major plus. ~A. Brown

I used this textbook last year for my Algebra II class. I personally loved this book. It had very good, worked-examples in each section that were exactly the same as the practice problems given. Most textbooks start out with some information explaining what is going on, and then the student is just supposed to put the pieces together on how to do the problems, whereas the examples in this book show the student exactly how to do the problems. My algebra teacher was not very good, and while she did work out examples on the board for the class, they just never made sense. By the end of the year, I stopped even listening to her lessons and I just did the problems in the book on my own. I made an A in the class, and even though math is one of my weaker subjects, I think I learned enuogh to do fine on the SAT and ACT.

However, my teacher disliked this book. She said that it really needed to include more graphing, and that it was outdated.

To each his own, I guess. I definitely think that its many clearly layed out examples helped me.

My high school used to use this book for our Adv. Algebra II class, but now the entire school has switched to this book.

Having use this book, it covered lots of materials including some material from Trigonometry too.
I currently also use this book for students I tutor. The problems in the book are very detailed and most of the "challenge" problems are good too. As with most textbooks, this one only shows odd answers too in the back.

This book provides enough problems to grasp the math concepts. It teaches enough material for SAT I, but for SAT Math Level II, you need to buy a pre-calculus book. As for ACT math, this book encompasses all the concepts.

The only complain I have is that there is one section about sequences and series, and at the end of that chapter, the binomial theorem is just thrown in. It just seems more suitable to place that theorem in the polynomial section.

I highly recommend this book for students wanting to learn Algebra II.
